CHAPTER TWELVE
The cool night air made it impossible to sleep. Nemir inched a little bit closer to the dimming fire, but it didn’t help much. The earth was freezing against his skin.
“You’re being ridiculous,” Soluc said, somewhat impatiently.
Nemir shut his eyes, pretending to be sleeping.
“You know that if we sleep against each other, we’ll be warmer.”
Nemir continued to feign sleep until Soluc sighed heavily.
“Do you want more firewood then?” he asked.
After a brief pause, Nemir nodded.
He rolled over, watching Soluc’s back disappear into the darkness.
It was a wonder he did it with so little hesitation. Even with the light of the fire, the gentle creaks and noises around them, put Nemir on edge.
Not to mention that his head was starting to really hurt. Whether it was because of the knock it had received earlier today, or the stress of the whole situation, he was unsure. Not that it mattered at this point.
Nemir pressed the back of his skull to the cold ground, relishing the slow numbing of pain.
He wondered if he could get his cut leg against it too.
After a moment of twisting unsuccessfully, he opened his eyes with a sigh and found Soluc staring down at him, a bundle of sticks in his arms.
Nemir sat up with a start, his brain bouncing around painfully in his skull.
Soluc raised a brow, an amused smile on his lips.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
Luckily, in the dark, Nemir doubted that his blush was very visible.
“It’s none of your business,” he retorted.
The haughty tone was usually enough for people to stop bothering him.
Soluc walked up to his side and knelt down silently. He began to methodically place the wood into the fire.
“Does your leg hurt?” he asked casually.
Nemir scowled at his back.
“I said it’s none of your business.”
Soluc dropped the last of the wood into the fire and watched for a moment as it began to flare up. He turned to look at Nemir slowly, his eyes narrowed.
He reached out to Nemir, taking his face gently in both hands.
“I already told you that I could feel it, or did you not believe me?”
Nemir swallowed.
He opened his mouth to speak, but all words left him as he was pushed flat to the ground.
“What are you doing?” he demanded. Why was his voice trembling so hard?
Soluc smiled down at him.
“There’s nothing much we can do about your wounds for now, but I can definitely try to distract you from them.”
Nemir’s eyes widened.
“No,” he said at once.
He tried to push himself up, but a strong hand held him down.
“I don’t want to do—that—again,” Nemir said. His voice sounded panicked, even to his own ears.
“Don’t worry,” Soluc said. He dropped his head down, kissing Nemir’s stomach, softly. A thrill of desire coursed through Nemir’s body.
He shut his eyes. No. This couldn’t happen. Not while he wasn’t being pushed by outside forces.
Soluc ran his hands along Nemir’s thighs, carefully avoiding his bound injury. His lips traced the path.
All Nemir had to do was say no, and he was sure that Soluc would stop.
